Alertec today another time

A driver crashed into a red-light camera at Division Street and Sprague Avenue in Spokane after falling asleep this morning.

The 6:14 a.m. crash blocked two lanes of the four-lane, northbound Division. Crews still were on scene at 8:10 a.m.

The camera, which has been photographing red-light runners at the intersection since March 1, should be replaced next week, said Spokane police Officer Teresa Fuller.

The man, whose name has not been released,”said that he has been working long hours,” Fuller said.

He was driving a Ford pickup with a trailer when he drove onto the sidewalk. He was cited for negligent driving.

The WayPilot system is an ingenious method of alerting drivers who have started to stray off course - this is made possible thanks to a bunch of embedded sensors within the asphalt alongside a shaking steering wheel. How does it work, you ask? For starters, radio transponders that are encased in robust plastic casings are buried under the top asphalt layer of the road. These will communicate with corresponding devices in the base of a test car’s door openings, and whenever the vehicle’s transponders get too close to those in the road, the steering wheel will start to vibrate in order to alert the driver. Hopefully it will be implemented in roads worldwide soon, as there are many drivers out there who actually take the chance and get behind the wheel even when they’re sleepy.
